Responsible for areas of chronic disease management, working as part of the general practice team to provide extra help to manage long-term conditions. CPs also help to provide better access to health checks and specific advice for those on multiple medications.

Clinical Pharmacists:

Undertake clinical medication reviews

  • Proactively manage and advise people with complex polypharmacy
  • Resolve day-to-day medicine issues
  • Consult with and treat patients directly

Entry requirements:

  • You must be registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC)
  • Postgraduate experience in pharmacy is usually also required

As part of the General Practice Forward View programme there is an education and training pathway that clinical pharmacists follow to support their continual professional development.

Pharmacy: CPPE General Practice Pharmacist Training Pathway


With NHS England announcing a new scheme for clinical pharmacists to support general practice CPPE will deliver the education pathway to provide comprehensive training for NHS England pharmacists. More information on the scheme including the pathway overview and core themes can be found here.

CPPE also offer the General practice – the fundamentals of working with GPs e-course for pharmacists being introduced into work in general practice. The programme is ideal for pharmacists working in GP surgeries and clinical commissioning groups (CCGs) as well as community and hospital pharmacist who are considering moving sector.
