This role provides support to doctors in the management of patients. Working under the supervision of a doctor.
Physician Associates are trained to:
- Take medical histories
- Perform examinations and diagnose illnesses
- Analyse test results
- Develop management plans
Entry requirements:
- Bioscience-related first degree required to join the training programme (although an undergraduate course is currently under development)
- 2 year postgraduate course
- Registered healthcare professionals (nurses, midwives etc) can also apply for this role
Training focuses principally on general adult medicine, rather than speciality care. This does not lead to becoming a GP, but can lead to further specialisation, management, research or teaching careers.
