Coaching and Mentoring

Coaching and mentoring are invaluable resources within the professional sphere across multiple sectors, as well as offering a wealth of positive outcomes on a personal level. Many situations may prompt you to consider it, such as starting a new role, experiencing a lack of motivation or resilience in your work life, or struggling to deal with conflict; finding the right coach or mentor to help you address your challenges could make a real difference to your progression.

Creating a confidential, safe and supportive forum to focus on your own development, goals and objectives, making use of either coaching or mentoring sessions can help you to navigate new or ambiguous situations with confidence, feel more in control of your own future (and present) and take positive action to achieve your goals.

There is a slight distinction between the two concepts, however. Your mentor may be someone experienced within your workplace or field who can share their expertise and knowledge in a specific area to help you progress within your role. This may be a longer-term relationship wherein you ‘check in’ and catch up on an ad-hoc basis to deal with specific challenges you’re experiencing. Working with a coach may see you in slightly more structured sessions within a set time frame, addressing your broader needs in a more rounded and often psychological level – you may explore your ‘drivers’ and reasons for your behaviour, raising your self-awareness and potentially a fuller understanding of others.

The positive outcomes of both coaching and mentoring can include helping you to take responsibility and ownership of your future, become more resilient and accepting of changes outside of your control, feel more positive and optimistic in general and help you to recognise and realise your potential to achieve your goals.

As a primary care professional in Essex, you can access coaching and mentoring via your local Training Hub which often provides funding to support personal development. Alternatively, the East of England NHS Leadership Academy maintains a coaching and mentoring register where you can find a coach or mentor via their online portals.
