Are you thinking of leaving General Practice?….Well think again with the National GP Retention Scheme benefits
The National GP Retention Scheme is aimed at GPs who are seriously looking to leave general practice or have left, who are able to undertake regular part time work, from one session to up to four sessions per week to assist with increased retention in general practice.
It is aimed towards GPs that are:
- looking to retire
- leaving for personal reasons i.e. caring responsibilities
- when a regular part-time role does not meet the doctor’s need for flexibility
- where there is a need for additional educational supervision.
Aims of the Scheme
To reduce the number of GP’s leaving the profession by encouraging flexible working / part time hours. Workforce data shows that the number of GPs leaving particularly aged 55–59 and 60-64, has risen over the last 10 years. Data also shows peaks in GPs leaving practice aged in their 30’s and aged 55-59.
Benefits of the Scheme
- Protected time for continued professional development and educational support is also included.
- Both the practice and the GP financially benefit, with between £1,000 – £4,000 per annum payable to the GP and the practice receives £76.92 per session.
- The GP can be on the scheme up to 5 years with annual reviews to ensure continual eligibility.
Eligibility
- Doctors must hold full registration and a licence to practice with the GMC and be on the National Medical Performers List.
- This scheme is only eligible to Salaried GPs, not GP partners, locums or trainees.
