Return to Practice Nursing

Nurses are an essential part of the care giving workforce, especially in primary care. This is why when skilled, dedicated nurses leave the profession for any reason, it is a priority of ours in Essex – and of the NHS on a nationwide level – that they are supported and encouraged to return as soon as they are ready.

Experienced, skilled nurses are needed more than ever before and with support and courses available to facilitate your return to practice, there’s never been a better time to consider coming back – and be reminded again of why you’re passionate about nursing.

There are many reasons why you may have taken a break from nursing – to take care of your family, change of career, early retirement or you may have moved geographically – but there are also a lot of reasons to come back! Retaining, and advancing, the skills and knowledge you gained in your initial training, progressing your career, working hours more suited to your lifestyle – and most importantly, making a real difference to people in your community – are to name just a few.

Even if you’ve been out of nursing for years and your registration has lapsed, there are courses available to refresh and reaffirm your skills, and to provide you with the support you need to get your registration back.

Getting back into this kind of work may seem daunting, but Return to Practice Nursing courses are specifically designed to cover elements of nursing that your learnt in your previous training, update your knowledge to current procedures and guidelines, and re-build your confidence so you feel ready to get back in the field.

Not only this, many RtP courses are fully funded, as well as offering an additional £500 for expenses such as books, travel and childcare. Some courses also include employer-led placements which will lead to permanent employment upon completion.

Depending on how long you’ve been away, courses can take between 3 and 12 months to complete and will include a combination of clinical placements, mentoring and self-guided study. These can be completed on a full or part-time basis, but typically will consist of a minimum of 15 hours per week.

Even if you don’t have experience of being a General Practice Nurse, you can complete a Return to Practice Nursing course – they are open to all previously registered nurses with relevant experience in the field – and often general practice is able to offer greater lifestyle flexibility (eg, with childcare restrictions) to those looking to return to practice.Picture2
