The COVID-19 pandemic has seen a necessary increase in working from home across all sectors, which has led inevitably to a need for remote recruitment processes.
This guidance is designed to support people who may be asked to interview remotely.
What technology will you need for your interview?
The interviewer will send you all relevant information about which platform they will be using for your interview. Many NHS organisations use MS Teams. It may be a good idea to explore various platforms including MS Teams and Zoom and play around with their functionality. Perhaps have a trial run with a friend to build your confidence for the day. Some organisations provide a how-to guide for candidates.
Before the day of interview
Many interviewers will speak to you before the interview to find out about any requirements you may need. Please do not hesitate to ask for specific requirements. The interviewer wants you to feel as comfortable as you can. Interviewers are able to adapt to your requirements and are there to help you.
If you are not told how long the interview will take then do ask. This will allow you enough time.
Some interviewers will check to see if you are happy for the interview to be recorded if needed.
Have a professional setting/background
Try to avoid cluttered backgrounds wherever possible and ensure that it isn’t distracting. If you are using MS Teams, you may wish to blur your background or make use of the pre-set backgrounds.
On the day
Wear smart but comfortable clothing. Ensure your seat is comfortable. Have a pen and paper handy and a glass of water. Ensure you will not have any distractions. If other people are at your home or place where you are interviewing, politely ask them to be in a different room during the interview.
